Russia tried several times recently to jam and block signals from British Royal Air Force planes when they took off from Akrotiri airport in Cyprus, which is seen as an act of electronic warfare against the British Air Force.

Military intelligence sources told The Times newspaper that a "hostile state" attempted to interfere with satellite communications of British military A400M transport aircraft when they took off from Akrotiri airport while British troops were on board.

The Russian attempts were not successful, the report said, but the military sources warned that this kind of electronic warfare against plane signals could have prevented the pilot from knowing where the aircraft was or the direction it was flying in. The only two hostile states close to Cyprus are Syria and Russia, and the sources said that it is not a secret that only the Russians have the capability to carry out this kind of electronic interference.
