The US Central Command, also known as CENTCOM (which recently added Israel to its area of responsibility) is developing several military bases in western Saudi Arabia that will serve as emergency logistics and supply bases. The commander of CENTCOM, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, visited several of these bases last week and announced that manpower, aircraft and weapons were already transferred to the bases to determine how to use them as logistics centers in times of emergency, and that additional locations are being considered.

The bases include a port named after King Fahd, an air force base named after King Faisal in Tabuk, and a base named after King Fahd in Taif.  A CENTCOM spokesman, Capt. Bill Urban, told AP that the plan to prepare supply and logistics bases was formed following the cruise missile and remote-controlled aircraft attack on Riyadh on September 19, 2019, and that the government of Saudi Arabia paid for the improvements at the bases.

The spokesman added that the planning measures are intended to allow access to the facilities in the event of a contingency, and should not be interpreted as an increase of the American presence in the region.
