Turkey unveiled last weekend an upgraded version of its hybrid main battle tank which combines the chassis of a Leopard 2A4 tank with the turret of an indigenous Altay, the Defense Blog website said. The report was based on a Twitter post by the Turkish Defence Ministry. The latest version of the tank was displayed during a visit by Defence Minister Hulusi Akar to the plant of Turkish commercial and military vehicle manufacturer BMC.
The website said that the upgraded tank is equipped with a Turkish active protection system, laser warning systems and a 120mm smoothbore gun. In October 2019, a senior BMC executive stated that the Altay tank would be fielded within 24 months, but there was a long delay due to the inability to manufacture significant components like the engine, transmission and armor.
