The US Air Force has placed 90 personnel and several unmanned aircraft at a base in central Romania, in an area where the European allies know the Russians display military strength. The Romanian Defense Ministry announced in Bucharest that the US Air Force personnel will be at the Campia Turzii Air Base for a period of "several months" in order to conduct information gathering, surveillance and research missions in support of NATO operations.

In a report, AP noted that Romania has a shared border with Russia on the Black Sea, and recently Russia armed Serbia with military aircraft, tanks and armored vehicles. Romania is a member of NATO.
