Spanish telecom company Telefonica is to provide E-Lynx software defined radios produced by Israel's Elbit Systems to the Spanish Army, according to a report.

According to the Infodefensa website, a 6.5 million Euro contract to carry out the project was awarded at the beginning of October by the General Directorate of Armament and Material, the Spanish Defence Ministry's procurement agency. The report said the radios have a range of up to 42 kilometers.

An initial shipment of several hundred radios is reportedly to be delivered to a single battalion, with the procurement to be expanded to other Army units if the deployment is successful. Spain is considered one of the main purchasers of weapons in the EU.

Elbit previously supplied the software-defined radios to the IDF as well as to the armed forces of Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and Brazil.  Such companies as Rafael, Thales, Leonardo, L3Harris, and Finland's Bittium also submitted bids for the tender.

The E-Lynx radios have been tested by the Spanish Army during its Tiwar exercise in Valencia in October 2017, as well as by the Army's Headquarters of Information Systems, Telecommunications and Technical Assistance in November 2019, and by the Army's Spanish Legion in Almeria as part of the Fuerza 2035 force readiness project in March of this year.
