The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports that Russian concern Kalashnikov has created a new NATO-caliber assault rifle, the AK-19.  The rifle will reportedly be unveiled at an army event in Moscow at the end of August.

According to a video posted on the concern's Telegram channel, the 5.56mm NATO caliber rifle was created on the basis of the AK-12. Its principal features are a lightweight telescopic buttstock with improved ergonomics, a new rear sight, and a slotted flash suppressor with the ability to quickly mount a silencer.

The AK-12 assault rifle of 5.45 mm caliber was put into service by the Russian military at the end of 2018. It is planned to be the basis for the production of weapons of various calibers and purposes, both military and civil. The civilian version of the AK-12 is called the AK TR3.
