At least one Israeli Saar 5 corvette has been fitted with an IAI-ELTA ELM-2258 Advanced Lightweight Phased Array (ALPHA) radar, Jane’s reported based on images from the multinational Mighty Waves exercise.
The five-day joint training exercise, led by the Israeli Navy and participated by ten other naval forces, simulated a major earthquake hitting Israel.
IAI-ELTA’s ELM-2258 ALPHA is a digital, multi-function active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that operates in the S-band to detect and track threats and provide guidance for weapon systems.
In May 2017, IAI installed the ELM-2258 ALPHA on an Israeli Navy’s Saar 4.5 missile boat.
Israeli Naval sources told Jane’s in 2017 that the Saar 5 corvettes INS Hanit and INS Eilat would receive the radar as part of an upgrade that would also see the integration of the Barak 8 surface-to-air missile.
The third ship in the class, INS Lahav, had the larger ELM-2248 MF-Star radar installed and was used as a testbed for the systems that will be fitted to the new Saar 6 vessels currently under construction in Germany.
