Report: Israel Hit Iranian Targets in Iraq

Israel on Sunday attacked a base in Ashraf, northeast of Baghdad, targeting a shipment of ballistic missiles from Iran, Asharq Al-Awsat reported. Western diplomatic sources also told the newspaper that an Israeli F-35 was behind the July 19 strike on a missile depot in the Amerli base

Israeli aircraft carried out two airstrikes on Iranian targets in Iraq over the past month, the London-based, Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported Tuesday.

According to the report, which cites Western diplomatic sources, an Israeli F-35 aircraft was behind a July 19 strike on a rocket depot in the Amerli base north of Baghdad.

Reports initially said that the attack was carried out by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and killed an unconfirmed number of Iranian Revolutionary Guard fighters.

According to Al-Arabiya, the base, used by pro-Iranian militias, housed Iranian-made ballistic missiles hidden in food refrigeration trucks. Arab media blamed either Israel or the US, but neither government commented.

The second alleged IAF strike reportedly took place on Sunday and targeted Camp Ashraf, located in Diyala Governorate, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Iranian border and 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Baghdad.

The strike targeted Iranian “advisors” who were present at the base and a ballistic missile shipment that had arrived shortly before from Iran, the report cited sources as saying.

The report also attributed an attack on the Daraa province on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights last week to Israel, as part of the efforts to disrupt Iranian entrenchment in the region.
