The Israeli military has uncovered a cross-border attack tunnel during construction of its subterranean barrier around the Gaza Strip, the IDF announced on Monday evening.

Israeli forces are currently investigating the tunnel route. A preliminary examination of the tunnel shows it hasn’t been in use.

A total of 18 cross-border tunnels have been discovered since the end of Operation Protective Edge in 2014.

Israel has been constructing the subterranean barrier with Gaza for the past two years. Some 40 kilometers (25 miles) of it have already been completed out of the planned 68 kilometers (42 miles).

The IDF intends to finish constructing the entire barrier by the end of 2019, in an effort to completely eliminate the tunnel threat from Gaza.
