International Security Conference Opens in Moscow

The eighth Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS) begins today (Tuesday) at the Radisson Collection Hotel in the Russian capital.

According to Sputnik News, the conference will focus on the improvement of arms control systems, the security situation in the Middle East, particularly the Syrian crisis, the expansion of security cooperation in Asia, Africa and Latin America, among other issues.

Plenary sessions will deal with topics such as Arctic security challenges, "hybrid" warfare, and the defeat of ISIS. Other issues would be discussed throughout the event, including ballistic missile defense, the suspended Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) between Russia and the United States, terrorism and illegal migration in Northern Africa, as well as reconstruction and return of refugees in Syria and Iraq.

Along with senior Russian officials such as Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the conference will be attended by Secretary General of Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Thomas Greminger, Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami, Indian Defense Secretary Sanjay Mitra, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and many others.

The MCIS in an annual event that brings together defense ministers, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, and military experts. Last year, the conference was attended by some 850 delegates from 95 countries, according to the organizers.
