North Korea on Thursday said it had test-fired a new type of "tactical guided weapon."

The Korean Central News Agency reported that the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, observed the test carried out by the Academy of Defense Science on Wednesday. The agency did not specify what type of weapon was involved in the test, according to The New York Times.

Kim praised the weapon’s capabilities, the state-run KCNA reported. “The development and completion of this weapons system will be a great historic event in strengthening the combat capability of the People's Army,” KCNA cited him as saying.

According to US Department of Defense officials, no missile launch was detected by US Northern Command and Strategic Command, CNN reported.

The Telegraph adds that shortly after the test, North Korea demanded that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo be removed from nuclear disarmament talks. Pyongyang wanted a replacement for Pompeo who would be “more careful and mature,” the North’s state media reported on Thursday, accusing the senior US official of undermining negotiations.
