Apple, GAO Push for GDPR-Like US Privacy Legislation

Apple CEO Tim Cook and the Senators pushing for a US version of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules have found an ally in the Government Accountability Office, according to engadget.com.

In a report publishing its findings for a study commissioned by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, GAO recommended establishing comprehensive legislation on internet privacy.

The government agency suggests putting the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) in charge of enforcing the rules, which would be designed to give people more control over their own data.

“The United States does not have a comprehensive Internet privacy law governing the collection, use, and sale or other disclosure of consumers’ personal information,” GAO said in its report. “In the last decade, FTC has filed 101 enforcement actions regarding Internet privacy; nearly all actions resulted in settlement agreements requiring action by the companies.”
