Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated that Ankara has no plans to renege on the purchase of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems from Russia despite the US pressure, according to Hurriyet Daily News.

“We have entered into an agreement with Russia on S-400. We have no intention to abandon it. We are working to make sure that S-400 systems are supplied in July as we were promised,” the Turkish leader was quoted as saying after the trilateral summit on Syria between Turkey, Russia, and Iran in Sochi.

Reuters adds that US officials had set an informal deadline of Feb. 15 for Ankara to respond to the rival US offer and have said that if Turkey proceeds with the S-400 purchase, Washington will withdraw its offer to sell a $3.5 billion Patriot missile package. They have also said it would jeopardize Turkey’s purchase of F-35 fighter jets and possibly result in the United States imposing sanctions.

Vice President Mike Pence, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, said “we will not stand idly by while NATO allies purchase weapons from our adversaries. We cannot ensure the defense of the West if our allies grow dependent on the East.”
