The Islamic State group claimed responsibility Wednesday for a suicide attack in the Syrian city of Manbij, the first such attack since President Trump announced a US withdrawal from the country, according to The Washington Post.

Statements published by the group’s unofficial news agency, Amaq, said the attacker used an explosives-laden vest to target coalition forces. The statement also claimed that nine American troops were killed or injured in the attack but presented no evidence for that claim.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that at least 19 people were wounded or killed. A Kurdish news agency said that at least ten people were injured in the attack, which it said occurred outside a popular restaurant. Photographs from the area appeared to show bodies and blood trails on the ground.

A spokesman for the US-led coalition said that US service members were killed while conducting a routine patrol in the city but did not say how many died or provide further details. In Washington, US officials said initial reports suggested that four Americans may have died. Earlier, Reuters news agency quoted an unidentified “US official” as saying four US soldiers were killed and three wounded in the blast. According to syriahr, the attack claimed the lives of 16 people, among them two coalition troops.
