Iran has confirmed it has launched a recent ballistic missile test, in what appears to be a breach of a UN resolution and Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Iran of launching “a medium-range ballistic missile that is capable of carrying multiple warheads.” The missile could hit all of the Middle East and parts of Europe, Pompeo said.

"We are continuing our missile tests and this recent one was a significant test," said Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force, cited by Fars news agency.

"The US reaction showed that it was a big thing for them and that it upset them," he said, adding that Iran carries out between 40 and 50 missile tests a year.

The UN Security Council convened at the request of Britain and France on December 4 to discuss the latest test which both governments described as "provocative" and "inconsistent" with Resolution 2231.

Resolution 2231 requires Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology” until 2024 at the earliest.

Last month, Hajizadeh said that US bases in Afghanistan, the UAE and Qatar, and US aircraft carriers in the Gulf were within range of Iranian missiles.
