Armenian army deminers and medics will join Russian forces operating in Syria by the end of 2018 or early 2019, Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan confirmed.

Reports of the deployment first surfaced in September, shortly before a meeting between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Russia has been urging Armenia and other post-Soviet allies to join its forces in Syria for more than a year. Previous Armenian leader Serzh Sargsyan refused to join the operation unless it received UN blessing, the position shared by other members of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization.
