Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday spoke briefly with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a luncheon event at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

“The conversation with President Putin was good and businesslike. I would even describe it as very important,” Netanyahu told reporters, adding that he also spoke there with US President Donald Trump. Netanyahu did not elaborate on the details of the conversation.

The two leaders, who attended the commemorations marking 100 years since the end of World War I, met for the first time since the shooting down of a Russian surveillance plane in Syria in September.

The incident caused a diplomatic rift between the two countries after Moscow blamed Israel for indirectly causing the downing of the military aircraft. Since then, the Prime Minister’s Office has been working to arrange a sit-down between the two leaders, but to no avail.

While Netanyahu finally managed to meet with the Russian President, no agreements were apparently reached regarding the situation in Syria.
