A rocket launched from Gaza hit a house in the southern Israeli city of Be'er-Sheva in the early morning hours of Wednesday, damaging it heavily. Another rocket landed in the sea near one of the major cities in Israel's largest metropolitan area.

In response, IAF fighter jets targeted over 20 Hamas military targets throughout the Gaza Strip. At the center of the attack is a Hamas offensive terror tunnel which crossed into Israel from the area of Khan Yunis, as well as a rear shaft of the tunnel. The tunnel was monitored by the IDF during the recent period.

Additional targets struck were tunnel digging sites in Zaytun and Khan Yunis, a maritime terror tunnel shaft in the coastal area in Khan Yunis, a factory used for the manufacturing of components and concrete boards for the building of tunnels and a factory used for the manufacturing of aerial weaponry in Tel Al-Hawa and Rafah. Furthermore, the IDF targeted a military site belonging to the naval forces in Khan Yunis and several terror targets in military sites, including a manufacturing site and a warehouse for weaponry and rockets.

"Tonight, a large portion of Southern Israel's population was put under immediate danger as Gazan terrorists fired a rocket at Be'er-Sheva, a major Israeli city located over 40 kilometers from the Gaza Strip," said Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, Head of the International Press and New Media Branch at the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit. "Clearly, Hamas terrorists have no regard for human life and their actions violate the most basic human values. We are determined to prevent and pursue the actions of terrorist organizations."

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said the military holds Hamas responsible for the rocket launches. "Rockets of the type fired overnight are in the possession of just two organizations, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad," Manelis said, adding that "Hamas is harming the prospects for an arrangement [on long-term calm] and easing [the situation] in Gaza, which mainly harms the residents of Gaza."

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot cut short his visit in the United States following the recent escalation. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman ordered the closure of the Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings into Gaza and a reduction in the permitted fishing zone off the coast of the enclave.
