Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced on Thursday that he will begin the process of selecting a new IDF Chief of Staff next week. The term of Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot ends on December 31, 2018.

“The process will be orderly and responsible, as the IDF continues to face increasing threats on several fronts close and far,” Lieberman said in his announcement. “I will choose the best chief of staff who will know how to lead the IDF to victory on the battlefield.”

The selection process is based on recommendations by the Military Advocate General's opinion and consists of six stages. Lieberman will consult with Chief of Staff Eizenkot and with former senior officials, including prime ministers, defense ministers, chiefs of staff and senior commanders in the past.

The defense minister will then interview the candidates, who will be vetted by the Senior Appointments Advisory Committee to ensure that all of them meet the committee's requirements and are qualified to serve as chief of staff. Lieberman will then formulate his position, in consultation with the prime minister, and bring the necessary appointment to the Cabinet for approval.

There are currently four candidates to succeed Eizenkot: Deputy Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi; his predecessor, Maj. Gen. Yair Golan; former Head of Operations Directorate, Maj. Gen. Nitzan Alon; and former GOC Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir. Among the four, Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi is considered to be the front-runner.
