Bahrain Purchases Hundreds of “Bunker Busters” from the US
The Gulf state will receive 500 BLU-109 penetrator bombs, together with thousands of general-purpose bombs, in a deal estimated at $45 million

The US State Department has approved the sale of General Purpose (GP) and Penetrator Warhead bomb bodies to Bahrain for an estimated cost of $45 million, according to dsca.mil.
“The Government of Bahrain has requested 3,200 General Purpose (GP) and Penetrator Warhead bomb bodies to include: 1,500 MK-82 (500lbs) GP bomb bodies, 600 MK-83 (1,000lbs) GP bomb bodies, 600 MK-84 (2,000lbs) GP bomb bodies, and 500 BLU-109 (2,000lbs) Penetrator Warhead bomb bodies.”
“The purchase of these munitions will bolster the Royal Bahraini Air Force’s ability to conduct and sustain air operations with its F-16 combat aircraft,” the report said.
“The 2,000 pound BLU-109 bomb was specifically designed to defeat an enemy's most critical and hardened targets: secure command locations, protected weapon storage sites, and key transportation and communication resources,” according to hill.af.mil. “The BLU-109's advanced technology one-piece high-strength forged steel casing is one inch thick and can penetrate up to six feet of reinforced concrete. The weapon penetrates the target intact to get to the deep interior of hardened sites, where a delayed-action fuse detonates the 550 pounds of high explosive Tritonal, ensuring complete destruction of the location.”
