Chile may become the first South American nation to deploy a ship-borne cruise missile with the capability to reach targets deep inland, as its navy is eyeing IAI/Malam’s Long Range Attack (LORA) hybrid missile and ballistic weapon, Chilean military sources told IHS Jane's.

The decision to have a ship-borne long-range attack capability was made in the early 2000s, the sources noted. Since then the Chilean Navy’s Directorate of Programs, Research, and Development has been working to define requirements and identify potential solutions.

Interest in LORA, with a 400-km range and GPS guidance, increased after successful test launches with the system’s operational land version were performed on last June from a commercial ship. Plans envision the missile’s initial deployment during the first half of the 2020s, the sources added.
