Two IDF Soldiers Killed in Hezbollah Attack

Serious incident in the North: Two IDF soldiers were killed and at seven more were wounded along Israel's border with Lebanon Wednesday after a Hezbollah anti-tank missile hit an IDF convoy near Mt. Dov. The wounded were transferred to hospitals around the country. An initial investigation of the case showed that the two vehicles that were damaged were Isuzu DMAX, and were unarmored, despite the high alert in the past week.

In response to the incident, the IDF attacked targets in southern Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented, saying that "to anyone who tries to challenge us in the north, I suggest that they look at what happened here, at the Gaza Strip. Hamas last summer suffered the worst hit since its establishment and the IDF is prepared to act strongly on all fronts". The Prime Minister said this during a speech in the southern city of Sderot.

The IDF said that "We hold Hezbollah responsible for the attacks in northern Israel today. IDF's response is not the last response to this event". At the same time Hezbollah issued a statement in which he takes responsibility for firing anti-tank missiles and claims that this is a revenge "following the assassination in Syria."

Defense establishment officials have been conducting discussions in the Kirya military base in Tel Aviv since the afternoon hours. IDF Chief of Staff Gantz arrived at the Northern Command in order to hold a special security assessment meeting.

The incident took place a day after the IAF responded to a rocket attack directed at Israel from Syria, which reports said Hezbollah forces in Syira were behind. Where were no injuries or damage as a result of the rocket attack. The escalation in the north comes more than a week after the attack on the Syrian Golan Heights in which several senior members of Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed. The attack was attributed to Israel by foreign media. Hezbollah and Iran also blamed Israel and threatened to avenge the assassination.
