Report: Hezbollah planned to assassinate Ehud Olmert

Was former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert targeted by Hezbollah? The newspaper "Al-Arab Al-Jadeed" quotes "sources who have ties with Hezbollah" who claim that the organization planned to assassinate former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in response to the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh, Hezbollah's operations officer in 2008 in Damascus. Hezbollah attributed the assassination of Mughniyeh to Israel.

According to the sources cited in the article, the plan failed because of Muhammad Horvath, an organization member, who was allegedly exposed recently as a collaborator of Israel. They claim that Horvath foiled the attempt and also the attempt to attack the Israeli Embassy in Azerbaijan in 2009.

As might be recalled, in December 2014 it was reported that Horvath was arrested by Hezbollah's security personnel claiming that he is an undercover agent of Israel who acted to foil Hezbollah's operations. According to one of the reports, Horvath was in charge of Hezbollah's foreign operations unit, who vowed to avenge the death of Mughniyeh.

The report of the plan to assassinate Olmert was not confirmed by any other source.
