The Minister of Defense, Moshe (Bogie) Ya'alon strongly condemned the violent attack on Border Police officers during the demolition illegal structures at the Yitzhar settlement. "We won't stand for factions that ultimately hurt the settlement, raise a hand against any element of the IDF, the Border Police, the Israel Police or civil administrators", Ya'alon said today (Tuesday) at a large-scale exercise of the Golani Brigade in the North of Israel.
The defense minister's words refer to violent confrontations that broke out last night (between Monday and Tuesday) at the Yitzhar settlement during the demolition of five illegal structures. Hundreds of people tossed stones at security forces, burned tires and blocked roads, and six police officers were slightly injured. After the demolition, an IDF post was attacked by settlers.
The clashes occurred after stressful days in Yitzhar, during which the wheels of a military vehicle were punctured during a routine patrol of reservists, as well as the wheels of the car of the IDF Samaria Brigade commander, Col. Yoav Yarom.
"In Yitzhar there are violent factions, but not all of the residents are violent," Ya'alon said. "These factions are hurting the settlement, being violent extremists that do not respect the rule of law. They will have to obey the law like any citizen of Israel. These violent actions - we will deal with (them) in any way necessary".
