Another revelation at the Singapore Air Show: Israel Military Industries (IMI) revealed a previously unknown air-to-ground missile. The missile, Whip Shot, is intended for hitting soft targets such as a person or vehicle in an urban combat environment, at a cost of under $40,000 per missile (compared to other, more advanced missiles in air-surface use).
The new missile is based on an old IMI-produced rocket, which rides on an optic ray. The total weight of the missile is 15 kg, which makes it possible to install on even tiny aircraft or a warhead weighing 6 kg.
According to Shmuel Geler of IMI, the missile has no independent homing system - the operator controls its flight from within the aircraft, as is common in second generation missiles. “A missile with fewer capabilities compared to the most expensive missiles is quite sufficient in many arenas, and the new missile we've developed should answer that need," Geler says.
The Singapore Air Show is considered one of the most important defense exhibitions throughout the year, and features guests and buyers from across the world, but primarily from Southeast Asian countries. The Israeli government’s defense assistance division, SIBAT, set up an Israeli national pavilion – which includes large companies such as IAI, IMI, Rafael, and Elbit Systems, alongside smaller companies such as Eromaoz and Kanfit.
