Egypt, Saudi Hold Joint Exercise

“Tabuk 4” is the latest in a series of exercises between the two countries. The training aims at developing and strengthening military cooperation between the Egyptian armed forces and their Saudi counterparts

Egypt's and Saudi Arabia's armed forces have conducted in October 2018 the "Tabuk 4" exercise that took place in Egypt’s southern military zone, headquartered in Assiut, and involved land forces from both countries.

The Saudi forces arrived at the Safaga Naval Base in Egypt. Egyptian and Saudi forces were received and briefed, in order to unify the operational concepts and coordinate the joint efforts between the two sides.

The exercise has featured theoretical and practical seminars on combat skills and a military equipment exhibition. The participating forces were able to fire with various shooting positions, using the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES).

The Egyptian and Saudi armed forces carried out several joint exercises in the last years, most notably the joint "Bright Star" exercise.

Egyptian-US "Bright Star 2018" Military Exercise

Saudi Arabia was one of a number of countries that took part in September 2018 in the Egyptian-US "Bright Star" military exercise in Egypt, the largest of its kind in the region.

Saudi forces participated in this exercise with paratroopers and special security forces units, which have been assigned to carry out a number of major operational duties, especially in fighting in the built-up areas, combating terrorism, combating piracy and air landing.

Commanding officer of the Saudi forces participating in the exercise, Col. Nasser bin Hatlin al-Suhaimi, said that the preparation for participating in Bright Star 2018 came in three stages, including meetings and preparation of integrated scenarios to unify the military concepts.

The exercise included a number of operations, in the field of anti-terrorism and methods of fighting and training, in air, sea landing, diving, medical insurance, and the implementation of live ammunition from various weapons.

Joint Exercises (2015-2018)

In August 2018, Saudi Arabia took part in the joint military training “Eagle Response 2018,” involving Egypt, the UAE, and the US, which was held in Egyptian territorial waters in the Red Sea.

Earlier, in March 2018, the Egyptian army took part in the major military drill “Gulf Shield 1” in Saudi Arabia, with the participation of ground, naval, and air troops from countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The two countries also held the “Morgan” joint naval exercises in 2015 in the Red Sea and the “Faisal” air military training exercise in September 2017. Egyptian forces also participated in the multinational exercise “North Thunder” in Saudi Arabia.

Summary

Egypt and Saudi Arabia are key regional allies that enjoy mutual strategic political, economic and military relations. Egypt is part of the Saudi led coalition fighting the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The "Tabuk 4" is the latest in a series of exercises between the two countries.

The training comes within the framework of the joint training plan of the armed forces with fraternal and friendly countries to transfer and exchange experiences and enhance military cooperation.
