The IDF will conduct wide-scale reinforcement of forces stationed along the Gaza border, the military announced on Thursday.

The decision to strengthen the southern command was made following a situational assessment by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot as well as senior IDF and ISA officials.

The military will continue its "policy to thwart terror activity and prevent infiltrations into Israel from the Gaza Strip," the IDF statement said.

"The IDF is prepared for a variety of scenarios and holds Hamas accountable for all that happens in the Gaza Strip and from it."

On Wednesday evening at least 1,000 Palestinians violently demonstrated at several locations along the Gaza border fence, burning tires and throwing stones at IDF soldiers who responded with crowd-dispersal means.

Over the past weekend, tens of thousands of Palestinians rioted near the border fence. It was the largest number of demonstrators since the resumption of demonstrations in the area earlier this month.
