Kaspersky Lab has frozen all cybersecurity collaborations with European agencies and organizations in protest against an EU statement that referred to its software as "malicious." The company said the accusation was "untrue" and demonstrated a "distinct lack of respect."

The EU's motion is following in the steps of the US and the UK, which have banned all Kaspersky products from use within government offices.

On 13 June, the European Parliament adopted a cybersecurity defense motion to combat the "unprecedented threat" the organization faces from state-sponsored hacking. Part of the strategy will involve a review of hardware and software used in its various institutions to find the "potentially dangerous programs and devices."

The resolution also calls for a ban on the programs and equipment "confirmed as malicious." It then names Kaspersky Lab and no other software companies.

The company’s founder and CEO Eugene Kaspersky said in a statement that the European Parliament’s decision "welcomes cybercrime in Europe," adding that his company had no choice but to take "definitive action."

This would involve halting all collaboration with European cybercrime-fighting initiatives, including those with the Europol agency until it gets "official clarification" from the European Parliament about the statement. Also paused is Kaspersky's work with the No More Ransom project, which helps victims of ransomware recover their data.
