The Royal Thai Marine Corps (RTMC) has signed a contract with Elbit Systems to procure the 155 mm autonomous truck-mounted howitzer system (ATMOS). The ATMG will reportedly be deployed to the country’s eastern border near Cambodia.

The RTMC said in a statement that the contract was signed in late March and features the delivery of six ATMOS systems. Major parts of the system will be assembled in Thailand by the Weapon Production Centre’s Defence Industry and Energy Centre (WPC DIEC). Technology transferred from Elbit Systems will also allow other minor parts to be built by the WPC DIEC.

The contract is valued at about $26 million and provides opportunities for additional units to be procured and built locally if required. The systems will be delivered within 28 months.

The contract fulfills a long-standing RTMC requirement to augment its existing firepower, which currently includes a mix of aging Canadian-designed GC-45/GHN-45 155mm howitzers acquired in the 1980s.

The RTMC is expected to procure more ATMGs in the future. The Royal Thai Army (RTA), which has already acquired 18 units of the ATMOS artillery system, has a requirement for 36 additional units in the future.
