The IDF on Sunday announced that it destroyed two attack tunnels, one that entered Israeli territory and another inside the central Gaza Strip.

"The IDF foiled an attempt by the Hamas terrorist organization to rebuild an offensive terrorist tunnel in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip," IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said, referring to the tunnel infiltrating into Israeli territory.

The military's efforts to locate and neutralize terror tunnels have intensified in the past six months, Manelis added, stating that this was the fourth tunnel destroyed after being detected to infiltrate into Israeli territory. Several other underground targets have also been destroyed inside in the Strip.

The recent attempt was foiled through engineering activity in Israeli territory, led by the IDF Southern Command. The infrastructure was identified at an early stage and did not pose a threat to the residents of the area.

A second underground tunnel and several other Hamas targets were also destroyed in an Israeli airstrike in the Zeitoun area of the Gaza Strip on Saturday night in retaliation for the placement of explosive devices on the border fence earlier in the day.

"It doesn’t matter who placed the IED on the fence," Manelis said. "Hamas is responsible for everything that goes on in the Strip. Israel will not allow Hamas to use the Gaza fence as a staging ground for attacks."

According to the IDF Spokesperson, Hamas is investing enormous resources in the underground systems, building terror tunnels instead of investing in the Gaza Strip for the welfare of its residents. The attempt to renew the tunnel shows that Hamas is finding it difficult to accept the failure of the tunnel project, and continues to recklessly waste funds needed for local residents.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman credited the army’s destruction of the tunnels to "high-quality intelligence and breakthrough technology."

"Whoever thought they could attack us from underground has come up against an iron wall," he said, referring to an Israeli wall being built underneath the border to thwart tunnel-building. "Hamas invested billions in its tunnel project, and now they’re drowning in the sand. I recommend that Hamas invest its money in the welfare of the citizens of Gaza because by the end of the year its tunnel project will be destroyed."
