Saudi Arabia's crown prince told Norah O'Donnell of "60 Minutes" that his country would get its own nuclear bomb as soon as possible if Iran were to develop a nuclear weapon. Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke to O'Donnell for his first American television interview, which will be broadcast on 60 Minutes, Sunday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT.

In the interview, the crown prince compares Ayatollah Khamenei to Hitler "Because he wants to expand. He wants to create his own project in the Middle East very much like Hitler who wanted to expand at the time. Many countries around the world and in Europe did not realize how dangerous Hitler was until what happened, happened. I don't want to see the same events happening in the Middle East."

Regarding the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Bin Salman says "Iran is not a rival to Saudi Arabia. Its army is not among the top five armies in the Muslim world. The Saudi economy is larger than the Iranian economy. Iran is far from being equal to Saudi Arabia."

As for the possible nuclear arms race, the crown prince says "Saudi Arabia does not want to acquire any nuclear bomb, but without a doubt, if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible."

The timing of the interview is interesting since the crown prince is slated to meet with President Trump next Tuesday to discuss, among other things, the possible sale of nuclear reactors to Saudi Arabia's nuclear power plant. As a prerequisite for such a deal, the Saudis will have to sign a 123 Agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation pursuant to Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act of 1954. In order for a country to enter into such an agreement with the US, that country must commit itself to adhering to US-mandated nuclear nonproliferation norms. It seems that the crown prince has predetermined that Saudi Arabia does not intend to comply with such agreement.
