Russia’s intelligence services have increased their activities in Ireland to spy on companies involved in the technology, engineering and scientific sectors, The Times reported.

Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency is now regarded as a national security problem by gardai, according to the report, as it is believed to be actively gathering information on Irish companies, critical infrastructure projects, and those involved in research at the ESA Space Solutions Centre in Cork.

Gardai are responding to the threat by identifying and disrupting suspected GRU officers working under diplomatic cover. Crime and Intelligence, the force’s spying agency, believes it has thwarted at least one attempt by a GRU procurement officer to buy high-tech equipment in Ireland through a third party.
