Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has ordered the IDF to create a vast network of medium-range surface-to-surface missile systems, the Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported on Friday.

According to the Yedioth article, on January 4 Lieberman met with senior IDF officers and decided to form the array, pledging a starting budget of some 500 million ILS (about $145 million). The project could cost up to 7 billion ILS ($2 billion), spread out over a decade, depending on the number of missiles the IDF will acquire.

This planned missile corps is reportedly meant to act as the offensive counter to Hezbollah's vast arsenal of more than 100,000 short- and medium-range rockets, to complement the military’s existing defensive multi-layered air defense system.

Initial aspects of the formation of the corps were reportedly set to be completed by 2020. Israeli naval vessels are also meant to be outfitted with these EXTRA missiles, and a specially adapted model is also supposed to be created for the air force, under the IDF Planning Directorate’s proposal.

According to the report, the goal is to have a mid-range missile unit capable of reaching a distance of up to 300 km. At first, however, the corps will be outfitted with Extended Range Artillery, or EXTRA, missiles that are developed and manufactured by IMI Systems and have a range of around 150 km.

The EXTRA missile weighs some 150 kg and has a circular error probability (CEP) of about 10 m. In the future, a new missile will be developed to extend the firing range from 150 to 300 km. The EXTRA contains a solid propellant motor, stabilizing block, warhead, and GPS/INS guidance and steering section. It can be launched can be launched by IMI’s LYNX truck launcher, as well as from a variety of other available vehicle launchers.
