BIRD Aerosystems, a leading developer of Special Mission Aircraft Solutions (ASIO) and Airborne Missile Protection Systems (AMPS), has won a contract for the installation of the AeroShield pod on a number of Airbus A320 aircraft. Under this contract, BIRD Aerosystems will install the AeroShield pod with the AMPS-MV system on aircraft of a governmental customer in Europe. This contract follows a successful program of the AeroShield pod with a similar configuration on Boeing 737 aircraft.

The Aeroshield pod is an all-in-one integrated solution that supports the installation of BIRD's Airborne Missile Protection Systems (AMPS) on VIP widebody aircraft. Integrating the AMPS system, which includes five Missile Launch Detection Sensors (MILDS), one Missile Approach Confirmation Sensor (MACS), 2-4 Flare Dispensers and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), BIRD's Aeroshield pod is easily installed, provides Optimum platform protection with minimal interference to the aircraft, and can be easily transferred between different aircraft.

The AeroShield pod includes Bird Aerosystems' Missile Approach Confirmation Sensor (MACS) sensor, which performs confirmation of suspected incoming missile threats detected by the main electro-optical passive sensors, and "practically eliminates any False Alarms," according to the company. Upon receiving a pre-alarm warning from the electro-optical sensors, MACS slews to the direction of the incoming threat and verifies the threat’s validity. Concurrently, MACS also collects relevant information on the target (velocity and distance) and calculates its time-to-impact, enabling the most effective countermeasure response to the incoming missile.

Under the contract, BIRD Aerosystems will provide installation design, integration testing and qualification for the system. The AeroShield pod fully complies with EASA/FAA civil aviation regulation procedures.

Ronen Factor, Co-CEO and Founder: "Following a successful installation of the AeroShield pod for the B737 program, BIRD Aerosystems has won another major contract, this time for the installation of the AeroShield pod on A320 type aircraft. The fact that BIRD Aerosystems' AeroShield pod was chosen and favored over other solutions of leading international companies is a sign of proof for the trust our clients hold in the Aeroshield pod and the MACS solutions. In light of the growing threat of MANPADS to civil and military aviation, the requirement for an all-in-one self-protection system (SPS) pod is salient. BIRD Aerosystems' AeroShield pod is the ideal solution to this threat."
