Saudi Border Guard Receives New Patrol Boats from Germany

The two Lürssen-made 40m patrol boats will be deployed to Saudi Arabia's east coast

The coastguard arm of the Saudi Border Guard received two more Lürssen-made 40m patrol boats. Dubbed Afif and Buqayq, the new boats were delivered to the port of Dammam on Saudi Arabia’s east coast.

This marks the first deployment of these patrol boats to the east coast of Saudi Arabia. The first five vessels – which began entering service from December 2016 – are deployed in the Red Sea on the west coast and operate primarily from their base in Jeddah.

Under a contract signed in March 2014 and worth around €1.5 billion ($1.8 billion), Lürssen is delivering four types of platforms – comprising 40m and 60m patrol boats, 17m high-speed interceptors, and 15m high-speed landing craft – totaling at least 146 vessels.
