The United States has spent more than $76 billion in the last 16 years on arming the Afghan security forces, says a new report by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO).

According to dawn.com, the report noted that despite spending so much money, the United States has not yet achieved its primary objective: enabling the Afghan security forces to operate independently.

However, the United States is likely to maintain its support to Afghanistan because the country’s "stability and security continue to face threats from the Taliban-led insurgency, criminal networks, and terrorist organizations, including the militant Islamic State group–Khorasan," the report adds.

According to the GAO report, key US-funded equipment includes 600,000 weapons, such as rifles; 163,000 tactical and nontactical radios; 76,000 vehicles, such as Humvees; 30,000 equipment items for disposing of explosives, such as bomb disposal robots; 16,000 equipment items for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, such as unmanned surveillance drones; and 208 aircraft, such as helicopters.
