Israel Tests Rocket Propulsion System

The Israeli defense establishment conducted a test launch of a rocket propulsion system in central Israel; defense officials did not comment on whether the test was successful or not

Israel on Monday tested a rocket propulsion system, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced.

"Israel has tested a new rocket propulsion system from a base in the center of the country," the ministry said in a brief statement. "The test was arranged in advance by the security services and was carried out as planned."

The statement did not say whether the launch had been successful.

Based on eyewitness accounts, it took place at the Palmachim air base in the center of the country.

A projectile could be seen clearly, streaking through the sky.

Commentators speculated that the system tested Monday could be installed in surface-to-surface such as the Jericho, which, according to foreign reports, can be equipped with a nuclear warhead; or surface-to-air missiles like the Arrow, which is primarily designed to shoot down intercontinental ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere.
