India to Buy 100 Barak-1 SR-SAMs for $76 Million

The Indian Ministry of Defense has approved the purchase of new interceptors for IAI's Barak-1 system, which is installed on board 14 Indian naval vessels

India's Ministry of Defense approved procurements worth USD132.3 million that include 100 Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)/Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Barak-1 short-range surface-to-air missiles (SR-SAMs) for USD76 million for the Indian Navy.

The procurement approval by the MoD's Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) took place ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel in July 2017: the first ever by an Indian prime minister.

Note: The Barak-1 system is installed on board 14 Indian Navy ships, including the sole Indian aircraft carrier. However, India is currently looking for a new system to replace the Barak-1. It is possible that the reason for this procurement is to replenish the Indian arsenal for the next few years until the new system arrives.
