"We are the spearhead of research activity in the fields of Big Data, artificial intelligence and information security, which, to our delight, are available to the leading companies in today's high-tech world," said Neta Cohen, CEO of B.G. Negev Technologies, the application company of the Ben-Gurion University, at the signature of the agreement.

The Ben-Gurion University and PayPal announced a new Israeli partnership. The Ben-Gurion University and PayPal will engage in joint studies and development projects in the fields of Big Data, machine learning and cybersecurity. This is the first alliance where the PayPal Company associates with an academic institution in Israel. Details regarding the new alliance were publicized during the NexTech International Advanced Technology Conference held at the new high-tech park in Be'er-Sheva. This conference constitutes the first meeting of its kind in Israel, bringing together specialists involved in the most advanced technological developments from global industry and academia.

"The agreement will enable PayPal to leverage the standards of the research activities and researchers of the Ben-Gurion University, which are based on years of groundbreaking research activity," stated Matan Parnas, CEO of PayPal Israel. "The cooperative alliance will enhance PayPal's global leadership position in the use of machine learning and Big Data technologies for the purpose of fraud detection, risk management and cybersecurity. It will enable us to continue to provide the most advanced technology in the field of on-line payment security to more than 192 million PayPal clients worldwide."

Professor Dan Blomberg, the university's Vice President and R&D Dean: "This is an opportunity for researchers to address challenges that combine research and academic knowledge with the applied business world. The Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is world renowned as a research leader in the fields of cybersecurity and Big Data, and we are pleased for the opportunity to apply this research expertise to the task of addressing the demands of a company like PayPal."

Neta Cohen, CEO of B.G. Negev Technologies, the university's application company: "Be'er-Sheva has evolved into a global cybersecurity center in recent years, which attracted leading international corporations to come here. PayPal's presence provides that company with access to the technology and to the talented people of this ecosystem."

PayPal's Israeli development center has played a major role in promoting the Company's Big Data and machine learning activities since the acquisition of Fraud Sciences in 2008 and the establishment of the R&D center in Tel-Aviv. For the past eight years, this center has provided the world's most advanced technology in the fields of fraud detection, data sciences and Big Data technologies. The acquisition (in 2015) of CyActive, which had developed within the incubator of JVP and the University, was another step in the context of this trend, and as a result – the center for global security products was established in Be'er-Sheva, adjacent to the Ben-Gurion University.

The new agreement is based on the on-going relations between PayPal and the Ben-Gurion University in the fields of training, instruction and personnel recruitment in the field of cyber technology.
