one of the main problems with machine guns is that the procurement officers think they last a long time, but they don't. older machine guns jam a lot and many soldiers and officers think that if you maintain the old gun it wont jam but they are wrong, the metal has bin deformed over time whether because of past bad handling or because of regular firing. iv had the privilege of maintaining and firing both new and old MAG and M2 Browning machine guns and i have to say that the new guns fire allot better no matter how well you try to maintain the older guns. iv fires thousands of rounds out of both and new guns even after thousands of rounds dont jam, while old ones.
